The Impact of AI on Employment
A recent survey from the World Economic Forum’s 2025 Future of Jobs Report indicates that 41% of employers are considering downsizing their workforce due to AI. This figure rises to 48% in the United States. However, experts suggest that this does not spell a 'jobs apocalypse'.
Upskilling Over Downsizing
Till Leopold, lead author of the study, emphasizes that the focus should be on upskilling rather than fearing job loss. The report reveals that 77% of employers are planning to upskill their current workforce to effectively collaborate with AI, and 47% aim to transition employees from declining roles to new opportunities within the organization.
Changing Nature of Jobs
Leopold notes that while certain roles—particularly white-collar jobs in data entry, clerical work, and even graphic design—may evolve or diminish, it doesn’t equate to a loss of jobs overall. Instead, jobs will likely transform into new forms that require different skill sets.
Supporting Data
Supporting this view, a June 2024 survey of chief financial officers indicated that 37% had already used AI for tasks previously handled by employees, with 54% planning to adopt this approach within the next year. Yet, many experts, including John Graham from Duke University, believe this will lead to a shift in responsibilities rather than widespread layoffs.
The Road Ahead
Looking towards the future, soft skills such as creativity, collaboration, resilience, and agility will become increasingly important in the workplace. As routine tasks become automated, the demand for these human skills will rise.
