Overview
Bell Media has announced a significant workforce reduction, cutting 98 jobs through a combination of layoffs and buyouts. This move primarily affects positions in the service and corporate departments, but notably, no CTV journalists are among those laid off.
Details of the Layoffs
According to a company spokeswoman, 44 of the affected roles are union positions, with many employees being offered buyouts. This decision comes approximately one year after BCE Inc., Bell Media’s parent company, laid off 4,800 staffers in a major restructuring effort.
Impact of Previous Restructuring
The previous restructuring involved BCE Inc. selling 45 of its 103 Bell radio stations and cancelling various TV newscasts and programs, including the flagship investigative series “W5.” About 10% of those job losses were at Bell Media.
Assurance on News Programming
In contrast to the last round of cuts, Bell Media has assured that no news programs will be cancelled as a result of these layoffs, providing some stability for its news services.
