Quebec's Response to U.S. Tariffs
Premier François Legault is poised to announce Quebec’s strategy in response to the U.S. tariffs and Canada’s counter-tariffs, which are set to take effect on Tuesday. This situation marks the beginning of a trade war between the long-time North American allies.
Legault has warned that up to 160,000 jobs in Quebec could be at risk if the 25% tariffs are sustained. The cities most vulnerable include Saguenay, Trois-Rivières, and Drummondville, as highlighted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce.
In response to this crisis, the province plans to launch a fund aimed at financing local businesses, encouraging those looking to expand to seek assistance through Investissement Québec.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has criticized the tariffs as a “very dumb thing to do” and cautioned Canadians about a tough road ahead. He emphasized that Canada will respond decisively to this unjustified tariff imposition, initiating a 25% tariff on $30 billion worth of U.S. goods, with additional tariffs on another $125 billion to follow.
The announcement from Legault is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Montreal, as the province braces for the economic fallout of these tariffs.
