The Hunting and Fishing Branch – promotes sustainable hunting, trapping, and angling opportunities for all Albertans using objective-based management of game and fish. The branch is responsibly for the management and allocation of Alberta’s fish and wildlife resources, including statutory decision making, engagement and consultations as well as policy surrounding the the public, private and commercial uses of these resources. Role Responsibilities Reporting to the Director, Fisheries Allocation and Use, this position will be a part of the management team responsible for implementing effective stewardship of Alberta’s provincial fisheries and wildlife resources through effective policy and programming. This position will provide direct supervision and leadership to diverse teams of professionals including senior regulatory, science, policy as well as education and communications, to meet branch and departmental priorities while providing enhanced levels of engagement and interaction with stakeholders. Responsibilities Include But Not Limited To
- Developing and supporting fisheries policy, legislation and program renewal. Leading a team of subject matter experts through program modernization and improvements to the allocation and use of fisheries resources that support Albertans while maintaining conservation and opportunity.
- Participating in and being Alberta's lead on developing regulatory change packages, variation orders and recommendations for regulatory and policy renewal and modernization.
- Managing the subject matter specialists that produce the Alberta Guide to Sportfishing Regulations.
- Leading and providing strategic direction to Alberta’s aquaculture program.
- Developing strategies and managing staff and implementation of Indigenous consultations and public engagements around regulatory changes to fishing in Alberta annually.
- Providing leadership and direction to the management of provincial recreational fisheries including all native and non-native fisheries such as naturalized and put and take stocked recreational fisheries in Alberta. Providing direction and helping build priorities by way of fish species, management objectives, stocking rates and fishing regulations to Alberta fish hatchery teams to support the stocking of 2.1 million trout and millions of walleye each year.
- Lead and support fisheries engagements, education and outreach planning and implementation relating to allocation and use of fisheries resources (webinars, on-line, social media, websites, meetings etc.).

- A completed university degree in natural resources, environmental science, fish and or wildlife biology, ecology or a related field.
- Minimum of 6 years of related experience including supervisory experience.
Related experience or education may be considered as an equivalency on a one year of education for one year of experience or vice versa. Assets
- Extensive experience managing people and programs including a working familiarity with financial and business management planning systems.
- Working knowledge of fish and wildlife ecology and management systems to support a comprehensive understanding of fish and wildlife values, management objectives and allocation strategies.
- Detailed knowledge of regulatory programming and as a statutory decision maker (e.g., Fisheries Act and Wildlife Act ).
- Comprehensive knowledge of the policies, legislation and regulations governing the management of fish and wildlife resources in Alberta, including familiarity with monitoring government policies and approaches.
