The Organization
The APMC was created in 1974 under the Petroleum Marketing Act and is an agent of the Crown working to enhance the value of Alberta’s petroleum resources. On behalf of the Government of Alberta, APMC executes on the government’s direction and currently manages: the marketing of the Crown’s royalty share of conventional crude oil; Alberta’s oil and natural gas royalty reference prices, Alberta’s stake in the Sturgeon Refinery; development of business opportunities to support and enable industry growth; execution of commercial petroleum ventures that benefit Alberta and acts in an advisory capacity on opportunities and issues related to the petroleum industry.
APMC is an arm’s length corporation of the Government of Alberta with a team of highly professional staff dedicated to performance, accountability, and operating with a progressive, innovative lens in all we do, as Albertans and for the sake of all Albertans. The commission works with industry stakeholders across the upstream, midstream and downstream segments, as well as, across government organizations to understand and assess the challenges to realizing the full value of Alberta’s resources and the opportunities to enhance the value of Alberta’s resources.
The APMC is the commercial arm of the Government of Alberta with the Business Development team responsible for exploring value enhancing opportunities for Alberta’s resources and opportunities for building new markets for oil and gas products within North America and abroad.

Mandate
We are seeking a dynamic Senior Analyst to join our team, focusing on strategic marketing analysis and business development within the energy sector. This pivotal role demands a deep understanding of both global and domestic market dynamics and industry trends. The ideal candidate will excel at identifying and capitalizing on new business opportunities, significantly influencing marketing strategies, driving revenue growth, and enhancing our company's footprint in the energy market.
Key AccountabilitiesMarketing:
- Develop and maintain models to analyze market data, including pricing trends, supply, and demand dynamics, and regulatory changes, to assess market opportunities and risks.
- Develop in-depth analytical reports to be distributed within the APMC on a weekly basis and as requested by leadership. Reports to comprise, but not limited to, forward market views, such as supply/demand, benchmark pricing, transportation, and storage.
- Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to display results in a manner that resonates with your audience.
- Consistently Identify market factors that will affect Western Canadian Oil and Gas markets and APMC directly, provide in-depth analysis to varying internal audiences.
- Provide oversight of the Sturgeon Refinery marketing audit activities.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the Sturgeon Refinery and other internal departments to achieve objectives.
- Maintain existing process modelling, improve and develop processes to support business objectives.
- Provide oversight of credit exposure monitoring and reporting in real time. Help develop process efficiencies.
Business Development:
- Take part in the development of business proposals, presentations, and pitches to secure new contracts, projects, or partnerships.
- Identify and evaluate potential business opportunities, partnerships, and alliances within the energy sector to drive revenue growth.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data from various sources to derive actionable insights and inform decision-making processes.
- Develop new and maintain existing forecasting models and scenario analysis to support strategic planning, resource allocation, and risk management activities.
- Provide direct analytical support and collaboration with management in areas related to organizational and industry growth initiatives.
First Year Deliverables / Measures of Success
Success in the first year will be determined by the candidate’s ability to:
- Develop and implement comprehensive models to analyze market data, focusing on pricing trends, supply and demand dynamics, and regulatory changes. Deliver weekly analytical reports to the APMC, ensuring they include forward market views and actionable insight
- Provide oversight of the Sturgeon Refinery marketing audit activities. Deliver a comprehensive audit report by the end of Q2, highlighting areas for improvement and recommending process efficiencies
- Identify and evaluate at least three potential business opportunities or partnerships within the energy sector. Develop and present business proposals or pitches to secure new contracts or projects by the end of the year.
- Develop and maintain forecasting models and scenario analyses to support strategic planning and risk management. Deliver a comprehensive forecasting report by Q4, outlining potential impacts and strategic recommendations.
- Maintain and enhance existing process models to align with business objectives. Implement at least two process improvements by the end of the year to increase efficiency in credit exposure monitoring and reporting
Candidate Profile
The successful candidate will have the following:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, finance or economics and 5+ years of experience in marketing analytics, business development, or strategic planning, preferably within the oil and gas sector.
Experience:
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
- Proven economic, financial modelling and data analytics skills.
- Experience working within the oil and gas industry analysing upstream and downstream market economics and a deep understanding of global macro economics.
- Experience in oil sands and shale oil forecasting is preferred.
- Deep understanding of oil and gas market dynamics, including supply chain, pricing mechanisms, transportation, regulatory landscapes and cross commodities.
- Demonstrated experience in working in a dynamic environment dealing with complex issues.
- Power BI and Python experience beneficial.

- Strong communication, both written and oral, with effective interpersonal skills.
- Highly motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team environment.
- Must be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Strong attention to detail while having the ability to see the “big picture”.
- Ability to write reports, business correspondence, compile presentations and procedure documents
- Ability to work in a team environment with strong communication skills and ability to prioritize multiple ongoing tasks.
- Proven ability to prioritize and meet critical deadlines.
- Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
