Position Summary: As part of the Process Engineering Team, the Engineer – Refinery Production Planning/Economics & Scheduling is responsible for developing, maintaining, and continually improving the refinery production planning, crude & product scheduling, and product blending support. This role works closely with operations, process engineering, marketing, laboratory, finance, maintenance, and reliability teams to develop profitable operating plans and product movement support. This position will be involved in plant operation support, troubleshooting, and process studies as needed. Responsibilities:
- Engages all stakeholders to develop optimum daily, weekly, short term and medium range plans;
- Creates optimum refinery scheduling plans and coordinates with stakeholders for execution;
- Collaborates with process engineers to develop and validate accurate yield models for all hydrocarbon units;
- Presents the monthly business plan to senior stakeholders and creates reports that concisely summarize the plan and economic drivers for the Refinery;
- Identifies opportunities for the business by conducting sensitivity cases on a routine and as needed basis;
- Conducts economic analysis to provide business decisions regarding refinery outage plans and capital project plans;
- Provides support for refinery planning during upset scenarios and during off hours as needed;
- Performs blending evaluations, prepares blending recipe and coordinates with the lab for product certification;
- Updates and maintains accurate LP model for the integrated refinery;
- Functions as Unit Contact Engineers on operational needs of the refinery units as needed (monitoring, troubleshooting, optimization, turnaround inspections, efficiency improvement etc.)
- Performs refinery monthly mass balancing report;
- Supports economic justification for the 5-year plan, debottlenecking, and business development studies;
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Understands, creates and maintains a visible commitment to process and personal safety, as well as the safety of others; adheres to NWR’s Core Competencies to drive results and a high performance culture;
- Chemical Engineering Degree with eligibility to register (or already registered) as a professional engineer (P.Eng) in the province of Alberta;
- Minimum 5 years of experience in one or more areas of refinery, upgrader, or petrochemical unit - operation support or process engineering or production planning & scheduling;
- Must be able to collaborate with other departments to effectively execute production planning and process engineering activities;
- Must be a team player: willing to continuously and proactively collaborate, share, and seek information and guidance;
- Must be able to make decisions, in line with the refinery philosophy and execution plans;
- Ability to lead projects and collaborate with multiple stakeholders and to indirectly lead and influence small teams;
- Timely and effective communication – verbal, written and presentation skills;
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel;
- Working knowledge of a refinery economic model or working experience in operation / process engineering team support is considered as asset;
- Must be well organized, a strategic thinker and planner with an ability to recognize when detailed information is required and interpret that detail to evaluate project progress and issues;
- Must be willing to support refinery operations during off-duty hours and weekends during upsets, abnormal situations, and coverage rotation.
